5 Excellent Messages

Message Series on the Book of 2 Timothy

Instead of sharing a message series from one pastor with you, we wanted to share a handful of messages that have transformed our lives, all from the book of 2 Timothy. We pray that these powerful exhortations from God’s Word will fill you with courage and motivate you to keep trusting God’s Word, remember Jesus, and fulfill whatever ministry God has given you.

1. Five Characteristics of Christian Life and Service

by Sinclair Ferguson | 2 Timothy 1

What should Christian life and service look like? In this 41-minute message, Sinclair Ferguson highlights five characteristics in Timothy’s life that are models for us. Audio starts at 0:09 seconds.

Sinclair Ferguson (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary and the former senior minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He is the author of several books, including By Grace Alone and Lessons from the Upper Room. Sinclair and his wife, Dorothy, have four grown children.

2. Feed the Flame of God’s Gift

by John Piper | 2 Timothy 1:1-12

How do we get white hot courage to unashamedly share the message about Jesus with others and to be willing to suffer for Jesus? Paul is passionate to see this radical desire burn in Timothy’s heart, and John Piper desires that same work of God’s Spirit to happen in our hearts today.

John Piper is founder and lead teacher of desiringGod.org and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary. He served for thirty-three years as a pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is the author of more than fifty books, including Desiring God; Don’t Waste Your Life; and Providence.

3. A Good Soldier

by Kevin DeYoung | 2 Timothy 2:1-13

In this inspiring 50-minute message, Kevin DeYoung takes us to God’s Word to show us a vision for the Christian life that will inspire and challenge each of us.

Kevin DeYoung (PhD, University of Leicester) is the senior pastor at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, North Carolina, and associate professor of systematic theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte. He has written books for children, adults, and academics, including Just Do Something; Crazy Busy; and The Biggest Story. Kevin and his wife, Trisha, have nine children.

4. Remember Jesus Christ

by Shai Linne | 2 Timothy 2:8

Timothy was clearly a gifted, godly, preaching missionary who suffered. So why would Paul tell a guy like this that he needs to “remember Jesus Christ”? In this 27-minute, powerful message, Shai Linne talks about the temptation we face to take our eyes off of Jesus when we are suffering.

Shai Linne: “Among other things, I am a recording artist and author. I have put out numerous Christian hip-hop albums, including The Attributes of God and The Atonement. As an author, my first book, God Made Me and You, was published in 2018. I also had the privilege of helping to plant Risen Christ Fellowship in September 2015 in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA. In 2010, I completed a pastoral internship at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington D.C., before serving for two years as an elder at Del Ray Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA. I am happily married to Blair and we have three children- Sage, Maya and Ezra.”

5. Why Preach?

by Josh Parsons | 1 Timothy 4:1-4

Paul exhorts Timothy to “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2 NIV). Why do churches value preaching so much, when it seems to be an outdated form of communication? Josh Parsons helps us understand from 2 Timothy why it’s so important that we highly value preaching.

Josh Parsons grew up in Minnesota and has been married to his wife, Sarah, since 2010. They have three children, Nora, Quinn, and Haddon. Josh has served as the pastor of The Orchard—North Shore since May 2016. Josh loves Jesus, his church, his family, and superheroes. Josh and The Orchard generously contributed these messages for your benefit!
