“You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
(Psalm 77:20 ESV)

Do you long for God’s leading in your life?

The last line of Psalm 77 caught my attention, and I hope it will not only hold yours also but help you to recognize God’s leading in your life.

A Precious Truth Asaph Remembered

Psalm 77 is the prayer of a man named Asaph. At the end of his prayer, Asaph writes, “You [God] led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.”

Asaph prayed the words recorded in Psalm 77 with a weary heart. The thought of talking to God made him moan, and his spirit fainted just at his attempts to seek God (Psalm 77:3). Discouraged, and drained, Asaph still chose to pray (Psalm 77:1).

Asaph prayed and opened his heart to God with brutal honesty. Yet, after expressing his pain and weariness to God, he also spoke to himself. “I will remember the deeds of the Lord,” he says, “yes, I will remember your wonders of old” (Psalm 77:11 ESV).

Asaph’s weary heart put forth a great effort to call to mind the wonders God had done in the history of his people. His reflection ends with the truth that God had led his people.

One Way God May Lead You

God leads us, as Asaph says—that alone is a comfort. But did you notice Asaph says how God led his people? “You led your people by the hand of Moses and Aaron,” Asaph wrote.

This one verse from Scripture so encouraged me. God led his people by the hand of Moses and Aaron—meaning God exercised his leadership through ordinary people. God led his people through the leadership of godly people.

Immediately as I read this verse, people came to my mind, people through whom God has worked to lead and guide me—my parents, pastors, mentors, siblings, friends, coworkers, etc.

Are there any godly people in your life? Have you ever experienced God leading and directing you through these people?

One Way We Discern God’s Plan for Our Lives

If you have put your faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and know him as your Lord and Savior, then you desire his leadership in your life. You want to follow God’s plan for your life. Yet it’s easy to wonder how to discern God’s will. It’s easy to get discouraged when you can’t come to a conclusion about his will. You wonder how God will communicate his plan to you.

This very simple Scripture gives us a bit of wisdom about God’s leading in our lives. God will lead us sometimes through other godly people in our lives.

Have you ever experienced God’s leading through a loving fellow Christian’s word of wisdom or guidance? Have you ever experienced God’s leading through decisions made for you by your pastor, parents, or other godly mentors in your life?

As you desire God’s leadership in your life, and his clear direction for your pressing decisions, remember that God delights to lead us through his people. Pray for an open ear to hear the wisdom other Christians around you may have to offer. Pray for God to use the people in your life to affirm and confirm his will for you. If you don’t have many Christian friends, ask God to send you people who love him and who will be able to offer you wise counsel, that they might be an extension of God’s leadership in your life.
