“Power belongs to you, God…”
(Psalm 62:11 NIV)
What to Do When You Feel Powerless
As I knelt beside my bedside, I ached to feel calm again. Fear had found its way into my heart. I had let it in. Swirling through my thoughts were worries about tomorrow, the unknown, and all that I can’t control. I felt powerless over my circumstances, my future, and my own heart.
Various people and things I read reminded me that I have no idea what tomorrow holds, that I cannot cling to what’s most precious to me, and that I do not direct my own life; God does. So in the storm, I did the only thing I knew to do—grab the Psalms.
I would strongly encourage you to grab the Psalms when you feel powerless.
I opened to Psalm 62. Then I read about waiting on God (Psalm 62:1), and about leaning on God alone as my rock and security (Psalm 62:2). I read the gentle call not to be shaken (Psalm 62:2). And then I read about the power of God (Psalm 62:11).
Power Belongs to God
Of all the wonderful truths and comforts coming through the psalm, the little line about God’s power put me at ease.
He is strong. In fact, all the stores of strength belong to him. There is no circumstance or person beyond the reach of his strong arm. Twice in the Bible we hear God ask, “Is anything too hard for me?” (Genesis 18:14; Jeremiah 32:27).
The Lord can do something about every situation. He can perform miracles, orchestrate events, or change the human heart.
Power belongs to God. It is his. It’s not mine or yours. I don’t have the power I need. I cannot do as Jesus wants me to do or be who Jesus wants me to be without his power. Hence, I need power. I do not have power.
Believe Today in the Power of God
As my fears took shape so I could name them and pray them, I realized that God can do something about everything I fear. My God has all authority, and the ability to affect or transform any situation. He can change my circumstances, or he can change my heart.
Maybe like me or the psalmist, you’re waiting on God. Maybe you’re choking on fears. God’s Word says many, many sweet things to you. Here is one of those precious truths to cling to today: Power belongs to God.
He has the power to work in whatever situation fills your heart with dread, despair, or discouragement. He has the power, in fact, to do far more than you can ask or imagine him to do (Ephesians 3:20).
Tell God you trust that he is powerful. And ask him to use that power on your behalf in a way that will move you to trust him more.
