Commentaries by Dale Ralph Davis
We have read several of Dale Ralph Davis’s commentaries and therefore commend any of his work to you. Not only is he a respected Old Testament scholar, but he also lived a faithful life devoted to Jesus. It is clear from his writing that he loves the God of the Bible. He is a gifted Bible teacher, and his work will help you see many wonderful things in God’s Word (Psalm 119:18).
The commentaries of Dale Ralph Davis are not technical or academic, even though his excellent scholarship clearly forms the bedrock of his writing. Dale is a master teacher of Old Testament literature, particularly narrative. When you read one of Dale’s commentaries, you will be helped on multiple levels. First, you’ll be led to enjoy the literature of the Bible as Dale helps you see the beauty, complexity, and artistry of the stories of the Bible. Second, you’ll be wowed as Dale helps you understand the message of both familiar and obscure passages in the Bible. Third, you’ll come to see the relevance of even obscure Old Testament passages for your life today. Although Dale is a wonderful scholar, his writing is devotional, helping you apply God’s Word carefully and wisely to whatever you’re facing today. Dale does not make the Bible relevant; he reveals to us how it is relevant to our lives—every part of it!
Insightful: You will say “wow!” often as you read Dale’s commentaries, amazed at the narrative God has written in Scripture, which Dale helps us grasp.
Humorous: You will laugh out loud a few times while reading a commentary. His sense of humor lightens his books in an endearing way. The pairing of wit with study of Scripture makes his commentaries a delightful read.
Challenging: Dale’s books are not a challenge to read, but they will challenge you spiritually! As Dale helps us grasp the message of various Scripture passages, we are cut to the heart by the convicting, transforming, revealing nature of the Word of God!
Enjoyable: Dale’s commentaries are not academic books. Anyone could read one of these commentaries alongside their Bible and be helped in their study of Scripture. He is a great writer, and winsome communicator; thus, you’ll find reading his commentaries enjoyable.
Phenomenal: The word phenomenal means outstanding. Truly these are some of our favorite commentaries, and we would recommend them to anyone heartily. Through this writing, you will see how Jesus is central to Scripture, you will see the glory of God’s Word, and the good and kind character of God revealed in the Bible.
Dale Ralph Davis was a professor and Bible scholar. He is a beloved Old Testament commentator, having written commentaries on many Old Testament books, perhaps most well-known for his commentaries on 1-2 Samuel. He served as the minister in residence at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Before that, he was the pastor of Woodland Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson.
From the Publisher: Christian Focus Publications (CFP) is all about the message. The message of the gospel; the message of God’s word communicated in the book of books, the Bible. CFP has been producing Christian books since the early 1970’s, with the express purpose of:
1) Staying faithful. In dependence upon God we seek to impact the world through literature faithful to his infallible word. Our aim is to ensure that the Lord Jesus Christ is presented as the only hope to obtain forgiveness of sin, live a useful life and look forward to heaven with him.
2) Reaching out. Christ’s last command requires us to reach out to our world with his gospel. We seek to help fulfil that by publishing books, which point people towards Jesus and for them to develop a Christ–like maturity. We aim to equip all levels of readers for life, work, ministry and mission.
From Bibles.net: We especially appreciate the quality and faithfulness of the authors that Christian Focus Publications chooses to publish.
