What does it mean to follow Jesus? How can you help others follow Jesus?
“Disciple” is the word the Bible uses to describe those who follow Jesus. To disciple others is to teach them how to follow Jesus. In Discipling: How to Help Others Follow Jesus, author and pastor Mark Dever outlines the who, what, where, when, why, and how of discipling.
Following the pattern found in the Bible, this book explains how disciple-making relationships should function in the context of the local church, teaching us how to cultivate a culture of discipleship—helping one another follow Jesus—as a normal part of our everyday lives.
Biblical: You will find as you read this book that it constantly appeals to the Bible as our ultimate authority—founding all that it teaches upon what the Bible says. You are not reading one pastor’s opinion about how discipleship ought to look; you are reading an explanation of what the Bible teaches us about helping others follow Jesus.
Direct: Mark very directly exhorts us to obey God’s teaching about discipleship, helping us understand what God expects of his people. It’s refreshing to hear with such clarity what God requires of us, so that we are no longer left wondering about our responsibility to one another as followers of Jesus.
Hopeful: As you learn about what discipleship is and how to do it biblically, you will also catch God’s vision for how he wants relationships within the church to look. You will see that God intends to care for you through others as you follow him and also intends for you to care for others in order to help them follow him. You’ll come to see that the biblical vision for Christian relationships is awesome and a great gift from God.
Practical: This book does more than describe discipleship. It will move you to start discipling others. It’s so intensely practical that it will move you to pull out your calendar, text your friends, or go to the Lord in prayer. It not only shapes your idea of discipleship according to the Bible, but it also gives you hands-on steps toward initiating discipleship relationships.
Concise: Somehow, this little book comprehensively teaches us about discipleship, while still being clear, concise, and conversational. You’ll enjoy reading this book, and it won’t take you very long!
