In about an hour, this book will get one lasting necessary thought drilled into your heart—if you are a Christian, then you are a soldier. Life is now war. It will wake you up to the reality of the war raging all around, but it will also give you hope. The book makes three simple points. First, true Christianity is a fight. Second, true Christianity is a fight of faith (and J.C. Ryle helps us understands what this means). Lastly, that the war we are engaged in is a “good fight.” The book ends with encouragement in the best sense of the word—courage to fight as a soldier in the Lord Jesus’s army. This little book will do you a big service by introducing you to the reality of spiritual warfare from a biblical perspective.

Why We Love This Book

Concise: Not only is this a short book, but it includes short sentences and plain writing. You may come across an “old” sounding word here and there, since J.C. Ryle wrote this in the 1800s, but you will find that he communicates precious and profound truth very plainly.

Necessary: We need this book, or the truths in it. It is a welcome wake-up call to anyone who has become passive in their faith in Jesus and anyone who may have forgotten that we live in a spiritual war.

Encouraging: You may expect a book about spiritual warfare and fighting for holiness to make you feel afraid or burdened or generally heavy. This book lifts your eyes to Jesus, reminding us that the victory rests with him. It challenges us to engage in the fight we find ourselves in. And as we do, the book not only wakes you up to war, but fills your heart with courage that it’s a war worth fighting and a war that you’ll ultimately win through Jesus Christ.

Biblical: These eighty pages are soaked in the Bible, with J.C. Ryle quoting and paraphrasing passage after passage. He points us directly to the Bible as the means of helping our faith grow.

Direct: J.C. Ryle has a way of stating the facts up front—plain and simple. The directness and conciseness of his speech make it powerful to read. J.C. is unapologetic about the teaching of the Bible on the subject of spiritual warfare. His direct speech makes this book delightful to read.

Positive Impact
This little book will wake you up to the reality that you are at war, if you have put your faith in Jesus. It will remind you of your identity as a soldier, and thus inspire you to better engage in the fight.
Cautionary Note
Expect that at times the language of this book will feel archaic, since J.C. Ryle wrote it in the 1800s. Don't let this stop you from reading it, as you will find the book to be so relevant to your life today!

About the Author

J.C. Ryle (1816–1900) was a writer, pastor, and Anglican clergyman in England in the 19th century, whose works are still cherished today. He came to know Jesus at age 21, when he walked into a church service and heard Ephesians 2:8-9 read aloud, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (ESV). Ryle did his undergraduate studies at Christ Church, Oxford. He served as a pastor for many years at several churches in England, often writing tracts for his congregations and community. Ryle was widowed three times in his lifetime, and he entered into a ministry occupation because his father died and the loss of inheritance made it so that he could not continue in his law degree. If you read his writings you will come to see that he was a compassionate pastor, who loved people, loved the Lord, and deeply wanted others to know the Lord. Although he wrote long ago, his writing can be understood by anyone, as it is always conversational and straightforward. What you may not know is Ryle was a phenomenal athlete from his youth, especially good at rowing and cricket.
