Be Basic: Believing the Simple Truth of God's Word (Gen 1-11)

The “Be” Series

by Warren Wiersbe

Reading Level: Easy
Genre: Bible Study, Commentary

We have read enough of Warren Wiersbe’s work to know that we can heartily recommend any of his work to you. Not only is he a beloved Bible teacher, but he also lived a faithful life devoted to Jesus and loved the God of the Bible. He is a gifted preacher, and his work will help you see many wonderful things in God’s Word (Psalm 119:18).

Warren wrote a series of books on each book of the Bible called the “Be” Series. Pick any of them up and expect to be edified and taught from God’s Word. His books give just the right amount of historical detail, context, and explanation to help you understand the background of each book of the Bible. They help you grasp the message of each book of the Bible. They are not written to an academic or theologically educated audience—they’re written assuming you don’t have any biblical background, which makes them an accessible and enjoyable read for anyone.

Why We Love This Book

Educational: The background information given for the books of the Bible doesn’t bog down your reading process; rather, it helps you better grasp the landscape and culture of the biblical world so that you can better enjoy the stories in Scripture and better grasp the message of each book.

Hospitable: Warren’s books don’t assume that you know your Bible well. It carefully, patiently, and clearly explains everything you need to know if you’re coming to the Bible for the first time.

Interconnected: Warren does a great job of interpreting Scripture with Scripture, not only helping us understand the passages at hand, but teaching us that the Bible sufficiently explains itself if we read carefully. His writing implicitly trains you to let Scripture be its own interpreter.

Full of Faith: Warren writes assuming that the plain reading of God’s Word is clear, and that God means what he says. You will find his understanding and presentation of God’s Word to be uncomplicated and inspiring you first and foremost to trust God’s Word and respond to in faith.

Devotional: Although these commentaries help you understand a certain book of the Bible, they will simultaneously help you understand how to follow Jesus today. Warren’s exposition of Scripture is practical and relevant, demonstrating how all of God’s Word is instructive to us right now.

Positive Impact
After reading one of Warren’s books in the Be Series, you will come away understanding the message and main themes of that book of the Bible. You’ll also come away inspired to live with greater faith in the God of the Bible.
Cautionary Note
We (and many reviewers on Amazon) found the questions at the end of each chapter in these books to be unhelpful. If you are using this book to lead a group, consider prayerfully coming up with your own questions in order to discuss the book.
