Tired of Empty Promises?

What motivates you to try something new?

Promises. Promises like, “Shed ten pounds,” “find inner peace,” or “drown your sorrows.”

But not everyone wants to try the same things. Treadmills, gardening, golf, and almond milk aren’t for everybody.

So you try out the things that you believe will fulfill their promises.

Coffee promises strength, so you try it because Tuesdays are tough.

Advertisements promise you a satisfied heart through relationships, so you download that dating app.

A better physique promises better respect, so you retreat to the gym.

Promises motivate people.

But don’t we so often face the frustration of those promises failing?

You get motivated, start something, and then give up, because that product, procedure, or practice couldn’t deliver on its promise.

Why Don’t Worldly Habits Work?

Why do we stay unfulfilled? Why can we not fill the need to be better, richer, and stronger? Why are we always striving for more?

The answer is simple: Your needs are deeper than the world’s goods are able to meet.

However, there are promises available to you that will never fail. They can both motivate and sustain your life. They can jump-start your day and carry you through all seasons.

What makes these promises different, and why don’t they fail?

The answer lies in the one who makes the promise: God.

Everything he says is true. And when God makes promises, he always delivers. In fact, the whole story of the Bible is about a God who always keeps his promises.

For “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19 NIV).

The one who made you and knows your every need and every thought decided to speak to you. Through the Bible, you discover what God wants to do in your life if you will listen to him.

God wants to give you freedom from the guilt of your sins, bring you joy, give your heart peace, and take away your fear of the future. He wants to know you, and he wants you to know him too (John 17:3). What our souls long for most, but our minds have a hard time grasping is to know him.

God is the only one who can satisfy the many unfulfilled longings we feel.

What Does the Bible Promise to Do for Me?

The Bible promises many things, but there’s a special place where it poetically, beautifully speaks about God’s power to transform your life through his Word. These verses come from a song that God wrote through the shepherd, soldier, and king, David. It’s the nineteenth Psalm in our Bible. Here’s what it claims about God’s words,

“More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.” (Psalm 19:10-11 ESV)

God’s Words are sweet and they’re valuable.

If we follow them, they keep us out of trouble, and usher blessing into our lives.

God has given us his Word so that we can taste and see that he is good, more to be desired than anything else, that his way is best, and his desire is for our ultimate good.

You’ve tried to listen to many voices telling you how to live well.

You’ve met many empty promises.

Isn’t it time to try something new?

Open the Bible today.

Listen to what the Lord wants to say to you and see if his Word doesn’t change your life.
