Two Kinds of Righteousness God Gives Us

Here’s your weekly word of biblical encouragement from Bibles.net! Enjoy this short video devotional or read its contents below, adapted from a message by Pastor Britt Merrick.

The video above will help you better understand the gift of righteousness Jesus has given to those who trust in him.

Second Corinthians 5:21, “God made him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB).

There are two ways in which God gives us righteousness.

He gives us positional righteousness through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross—his blood. [He] views us as a pure, spotless bride, holy, without wrinkle, fault, blemish, or blame.

Someone say, “Hallelujah!”

And he gives us—by the power of the Holy Spirit and the sanctifying work of his Word—practical righteousness, drawing us into godly living, enabling us to live differently, transforming us. We are all—by the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures say—being transformed into the image of Christ, looking more and more like Jesus by the work of the Spirit (Romans 8:29).

He gives us positional holiness by which we stand in front of him, and practical holiness by which we live for him. Both of them are gifts from God, and when we get to heaven that gift will be so evident!

There we are clothed in fine linen (Revelation19:7-8). White and clean—I should’ve worn white today—white and clean. White and clean.
