Shane and Shane are two guys who met in Texas at college. Shane Barnard came to know Jesus in high school, and afterwards grew to love singing praise songs to his Lord. Shane Everett sang often in bars and clubs until the day he saw the ugliness of his own heart and called out to Jesus for forgiveness and new life. The two young men met over a borrowed guitar and have never separated since.
Shane and Shane love the Bible because they know that it is God’s Word, and they love the Lord. Their songs are meditations on Scripture and are filled with scripture, some of their most famous songs simply being the songbook of the Bible—The Psalms—set to melody. Their Scripture-saturated songs come from a firm belief that the Lord speaks through the Bible, and what we need to hear more than creative lyrics is the voice of God. It is hearing and believing the Word of God that transforms us.
Shane and Shane don’t just sing good content, they’re incredibly gifted at crafting beautiful songs. They also love to teach others to praise God and thus founded The Worship Initiative, which is an online training center for aspiring musicians, worship leaders, and any other believer who wants to sing to Jesus and learn to love his Word.
If you want to learn to praise the Lord, whether in easy seasons, or deep trials, put some headphones in and take a listen to Shane and Shane. They will teach you what it means to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” and to sing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16 ESV).
At the time I was like,
this is my life.
It’s just destroyed.
My heart is just a wreck,
my life is a wreck.
I hate all of it.
At this moment,
I just heard the Spirit
of the Lord say to me,
"Son, it’s time to come home."
We are falling
more and more
in love with the Lord
through his living Word,
and there is nothing
we would rather sing.
This article will commend Shane & Shane's music to you, as well as help you get to know their motivations and methods for creating music.
It’s everything. I rarely start a song without a trigger from the Scriptures. At the end of the day, I don’t have anything to say. I have to go somewhere there’s something worth writing about: God’s Word. If I’m gonna say something, I want it to be true, and the only place I know where I can find something that is surely true is the Scriptures.
Romans 1:16 says “the Gospel is the power of God to save” (ESV). That’s why Shane and I use songs to talk about the Gospel. We pray that God will use our music to save and sanctify as people drive in their cars in the morning and their kids are screaming in the back. We write songs drawn from God’s Word, because we want God’s Word to do its work through our music.
The thought of Bring Your Nothing came from Isaiah 65 and how we have nothing to offer Jesus. That’s the Gospel message. If you bring anything other than nothing, than Jesus has no part in it. He says, "bring nothing and in return, I’m going to give you everything, forever…" It requires a supernatural amount of humility to admit that you have nothing.
