“Praise the Lord.
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise him!”
(Psalm 147:1 NIV)

Singing Affects Us

Singing does something to us, doesn’t it? I know not everyone likes to sing, but I’m sure you let your voice loose sometimes in the shower or car, outside, or when you’re alone.

Back to my question—something happens when you sing, right?

You sing breakup songs and start to reminisce on a past relationship. You sing a piece from a musical and suddenly feel extra dramatic about life. You sing a country song and your attitude about summer improves. You hear a song with unsavory language in the grocery store and blush. You listen to some pop music and feel like you’re twenty-two again.

It Is Good to Sing Praise to God

Did you know that there’s a type of singing that can do good to your soul?

In the Psalms, the songbook of the Bible, we read “Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 147:1 NIV).

Songs celebrate, right? When we sing, we are praising something—a person, an experience, or even our own emotions.

The Psalms encourage us to sing to God and about God. The verse continues, “How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!” (Psalm 147:1 NIV).

Here’s a little truth from the Bible for you today: there’s a kind of singing that’s always good, always appropriate, always pleasant. It is good for your soul to sing praises to God.

God Is Worthy of Our Songs

We are created to worship God and find our happiness in him. As the source of all joy, God is worthy of our praise.

We can always find something about God that’s worth celebrating, no matter our circumstances. For our circumstances do not change who God is. We can celebrate God because he never changes, and his wonderful character is always the same (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).

Why don’t you try singing praise to the Lord today? Pick something you love about him and sing to him about it. If you need help, open to Psalm 103, and praise God for one thing you learn about him from that biblical song. Or jam to one of the songs below!
